Abstract
The research aims to reveal to what extent: (1) the mind mapping technique enhances students’ reading achievement, (2) the gender affects students’ reading achievement, and (3) the students’ different SMP background affects their reading achievement. The research was quasi-experimental research which involved two experimental groups and a control group. The sample was three classes of the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Kuala Kapuas, Central Kalimantan. The variables of the research were mind mapping technique, gender, and students’ different SMP background as the independent variable. The dependent variable was students’ reading achievement The data collection used a pre test and post test. Analysis of data used the ANCOVA. The result of the research shows that the mind mapping technique enhances students’ reading achievement. The result of hypotesis testing for the mind mapping technique shows p<0.05, that there was an enhancement in reading achievement between students taught using the mind mapping technique and those who are not. The result of hypotesis testing for the gender shows p>0.05, that there was no significant effect of gender gap among students on their reading achievement. The result of hypotesis testing for the students’ different SMP background shows p<0.05, that there was a significant effect of students’ different SMP background on their reading achievement. The conclusions are: (1) mind mapping technique enhances the reading achievement of the tenth grade students at SMAN 2 Kuala Kapuas, (2) gender does not affect students’ reading achievement, and (3) students’ different SMP background affects their reading achievement. The suggestion to the students is applying the mind mapping technique in comprehending the text. The English teachers are also suggested to use this technique in teaching reading comprehension. Last, to the other researcher, the research of the mind mapping technique is need to be conducted deeply.
