Abstract

The objectives of this research are (1) to improve the speaking skills using a combination of video and role play for the eleventh grade students of the Accounting Program at SMK Islam Randudongkal, Pemalang, Central Java; and (2) to find out the improvement of the positive effects in learning speaking skills using a combination of video and role play. This action research was conducted in three cycles. The research subjects were the eleventh grade students of the Accounting Program (XI Accounting 3) at SMK Islam Randudongkal. There were two videos played in Cycle 1; the students tried to do role plays based on the video and the situations given by the teacher. To reform the weaknesses of Cycle 1, more interesting videos were given in Cycle 2; the teacher called and gave the additional scores to the students who did role plays. Cycle 3 presented a video which was more interesting than before; the teacher not only gave the extra points but also rebuilt their motivation in order to have more courage to speak English. The data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning processes, interviewing the students and English teachers, having discussions with the collaborator, giving questionnaires to the students and taking pictures. The instruments used in this research were the observation sheet, the students’ questionnaire and interview and the speaking test scores. Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis technique were used in this research. The research results show that (1) the students’ speaking skills can be improved through the use of a combination of video and role play in terms of (a) developing speaking aspects like pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension; (b) improving the students’ achievement that can be seen from the improvement of the mean and the number of the students who passed the speaking test in every cycle; (2) there are some positive effects in learning speaking skills which can be improved through the use of a combination of video and role play in terms of (a) improving the students’ interest, motivation and self-confidence, and (b) improving the students’ participation in the teaching and learning process.
