Abstract

This study was conducted in response to the fact that the students’ ability in speaking English was lower than that they should have achieved. It was caused by several factors, one of which was related to the process of teaching and learning. In this research, project-based learning was used to improve the teaching and learning process and the students’ speaking skill. This study was classroom action research that was done in two cycles. The data collection was done using observation sheets, questionnaire, and test. The participants of this study were 32 students of class 7B of MTs Negeri Gubukrubuh Playen, Gunungkidul. The data from the observation and questionnaire were analyzed descriptively while the data from the test were analyzed quantitatively. The results of this study showed that project-based learning could improve the teaching and learning process at class 7B of MTs Negeri Gubukrubuh Playen, Gunungkidul. The students enjoyed the lesson when they did the tasks in applying project-based learning. During the teaching and learning process, they were challenged to be active, creative, and confident. In relation to the teaching and learning of speaking, the students had enough opportunities to practice their English. They could learn new vocabulary items. The implementation of project-based learning in improving the students’ speaking skill, it was shown in the progress of the result of the pre-test, post-test one and post-test two. In the first cycle, the students’ average score was 79 and in the second cycle it increased to 85.
