Abstract

This research aims to develop the reading comprehension in English written texts of grade 11 students of Madrasah Aliyah Al-Ikhlash Cicalengka, Bandung through the development of critical thinking in teaching process in the classroom. This research was collaborative classroom action research conducted in two cycles. The subjects were the 11th grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Al-Ikhlash Cicalengka, Bandung in the academic year of 2014/2015. The subjects involved in this research were 22 students (10 male and 12 female). The objects were the reading comprehension and critical thinking in teaching English reading texts. The text that was used to be the model was exposition; it was chosen since the material should be in line with the curriculum and the structures of the text were more analyzable with the concept of critical thinking. The data were collected through pretest and posttest, observation, field notes, and interviews. There were two kinds of data in this research; they were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were the results of observation, field notes, and interviews, while the quantitative data were the pretest and posttest scores. The qualitative data were analyzed by doing reduction, displaying, and drawing conclusion, while the quantitative data in the form of pretest and post test scores were analyzed by using descriptive statistics of each test administered in the end of each action to see the development of the score. The action started in the process of teaching reading to the students in the classroom. The students were introduced with the concept of critical thinking starting with the concept of position, agreement, disagreement, and argument. The Students also introduced to categorize the opinion and fact in the text. Finally the students were asked to do some task and give their opinion related to the position of the writer and their background knowledge. The result of the research shows that there is an improvement in students’ skill in reading comprehension after the actions were conducted in the teaching process. This is proven by the improvement of students’ score when they took the pretest, with the mean score of 4.42, and the mean score of 6.24 in posttest I and 7.24 in posttest II. The development of the students who achieved the score above the minimum passing grade score is 75 percent. This proves that improving reading comprehension could be achieved by developing critical thinking in teaching reading process.
