Abstract

This research aims to: 1) find out the target needs of grade eight students of junior high school in learning vocabulary through interactive multimedia, 2) find out the learning needs of grade eight students of junior high school in learning vocabulary through interactive multimedia, and 3) develop appropriate interactive learning multimedia for teaching vocabulary for junior high school students grade eight. This study is categorized as Educational Research and Development (R & D). The model proposed by Lee and Owens (2004) is adapted and used in this research. The steps are needs analysis, design, development and evaluation by materials and media experts. The subjects of the research are grade eight students of SMP N 1 Wonosari. The data of the research are collected through questionnaires which are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of this study are as follows: 1) the grade eight students of junior high school learn vocabulary to understand English texts. 2) They want to study vocabulary through stories and pictures related to the school life. 3) The units which are developed based on the target and learning needs are effective. It is proven by the mean value obtained from the questionnaires distributed to materials and media experts. The range of the mean value from the material expert is 3 to 4 for Unit 1 and Unit 2. The range of the mean value obtained from media expert is 4 to 5. Based on the quantitative data conversion by Suharto (2006: 52), they are in the Good and Very Good categories. The data from the research also show that appropriate interactive learning multimedia for teaching vocabulary for junior high school students grade VIII consists of three parts: introduction, the main activities and summary.
