Abstract

The objective of the research is to improve the reading comprehension ability of Grade VIII students by implementing the Genre Based Approach. This was an action research study. It involved 32 students of Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 3 Salam Magelang in the first semester of the academic year of 2011/2012. The data were collected by means of two techniques. They were non-test techniques and tests. Non-test techniques included observations and a questionnaire. The tests were administered twice in Cycle I and Cycle II. The data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.The Quantitative data were obtained from the results of the reading test in Cycle I and Cycle II. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.The Qualitative data were analyzed by categorizing, coding, and analysing classroom talk. The analysis of the qualitative data was used to find out changes in students’ behavior in the learning process in Cycle I and Cycle II and to find out the improvement of recount text reading comprehension through the Genre-Based Approach (GBA). The result shows that there is an improvement in the reading comprehension ability of Grade VIII students. The results show improvement from Pre-cycle, Cycle I and Cycle II. Students’ behaviours change from passive students into active students in the teaching and learning process. It means that there is an improvement in reading comprehension ability of Grade VIII students who were taught by implementing the Genre-Based Approach.
