Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the difference of effectiveness of using cooperative learning of the STAD type, problem-based learning and conventional learning in reading comprehension teaching at the English Department of Unidayan Baubau, South-East Sulawesi. This study was a quasi-experimental study employing the pretest-posttest non-equivalent control group design, using two experimental groups. The research population comprised five classes of the second semester students at the English Department of Unidayan Baubau. The research sample was established using simple random sampling technique to obtain three classes for the experimental and control groups, i.e. Class A, Class B and Class C. The data of this study were collected through a pre-test and a post-test to measure students’ reading comprehension. The data were analyzed by using Ancova. To investigate the difference in the effectiveness of the independent variable on each study group, the data were analyzed using the Scheffe test. The analyses were conducted using a computer program , i.e. SPSS 16.0 for windows. The results of this study show that there is a significant difference in the effectiveness of using cooperative learning of the STAD type, problem-based learning and conventional learning in teaching reading comprehension of the English Department of Unidayan Baubau. From the mean difference of the classes which were taught by conventional, the STAD type and PBL methods, it is indicated that the STAD type and PBL methods are more effective than the conventional method, meanwhile, the STAD type is more effective than PBL method. Mean difference of students’ reading comprehension ability who are taught using conventional learning and STAD type is -16.35. Meanwhile, mean difference of students’ reading comprehension ability who are taught using conventional learning and PBL is -10.26, and mean difference of students’ reading comprehension ability who are taught using STAD type and PBL is 6.09. Therefore, it can be said that the STAD type is the most effective method in the reading comprehension teaching at the English Department of Unidayan Baubau, South-East Sulawesi.
