Abstract

As English has become a universal language, at the same time, there is a growing demand to use it for communication the form of popular science, magazines, story books and also movies. Most of these works are translated into many languages, including Bahasa Indonesia. Foreign movies, especially the English ones, get into Indonesia at an increasing rate each year. For the sake of those who do not understand English, the English movie text has to be translated before it can be put onto cinema. The aim of this research is to describe the meaning accuracy of English – Bahasa Indonesia ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie texts and to interpret the meaning accuracy in translation study perspective. This research used accuracy rating instrument to assess the meaning accuracy of English – Bahasa ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie texts. This research applied descriptive qualitative research. The data sources of this research were all English dialogue expressions as the source text and its translation into Bahasa Indonesia movie text as the target text. The unit of data analysis was in the form of sentences, especially the complete sentences that at least consist of subject and verb, that are collected based on relevant theories. Some peers and the thesis consultants were asked to check, verify and discuss the data collected by researcher. This research shows that the extent of meaning accuracy of English – Bahasa ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie texts are high. This movie text is a kind of a good translation movie text. It means that the translator successfully translated the source text into the target text. There are 322 complete sentences found in source text. Moreover, the accurate parameter got 208 items of whole data, representing 65% of the total and therefore became the dominant parameter in this research.
