Abstract
The study was aimed at improving the reading comprehension of Grade X students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2014/ 2015 through extensive reading activities. The research was a collaborative action research was carried out in three cycles. The design consisted of: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. The data of this study consisted of qualitative and quantitative data gathered through observations, interviews, and video recordings, a pre-test and a post-test. The qualitative data were analysed using the interactive qualitative data analysis which included: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The quantitative ones were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Efforts were done to fulfil the validity, those are: democratic validity, outcome validity, process validity, and dialogic validity, and dialogic validity. On the other hand, the reliability of the data was established through methodological triangulation, time triangulation, and investigator triangulation. The findings show that the extensive reading activities are believed to improve the reading learning process which leads into the improvement of students’ reading comprehension. The process of extensive reading activities are done through the scientific approach in the following actions: (a) using sheltered reading on the internet; (b) analyzing digital reading materials; (c) sharing digital reading materials; (d) telling the truth; (e) writing one word a day, (f) matching blurb and title, (g) writing vocabulary journal, and (h) reading diary. The results of the actions are as follow. First, sheltered reading on the internet is found to increase students’ exposure to English both inside and outside the classroom. Second, analyzing digital reading materials can develop an interest in reading and provide motivation. Third, sharing digital reading materials enables students to bring knowledge from outside the classroom. Fourth, telling the truth can encourage student’s involvement during the instruction. Fifth, writing one word a day develops vocabulary enrichment. Sixth, matching book title can increase students’ scanning and skimming skill and guessing strategy. Seventh, writing vocabulary journal can improve vocabulary acquisition. Eight, reading diary is able to develop reading habit
