Abstract

This research aims at describing (1) the types of the illocutionary acts of Mr. Keating’s utterances when teaching, (2) the types of the perlocutionary acts of Mr. Keating’s utterances when teaching, and (3) what Mr. Keating commonly does as a good teacher when teaching which reflected from the speech acts he performed in the Dead Poets Society. This research employed both qualitative and quantitativemethod. The data were in the form of utterances spoken by the main character when teaching in the Dead Poets Society. The trustworthiness of the data was conducted through the triangulation by checking the data source, the method, and theories by the help of and two linguistics students as triangulators.The findings showed that as a good teacher in the Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating often used question form to deliver commands to the students which are a good teachers’ classroom English. He also performed mostly directives as the illocutionary acts as he often asked the students to do some works as assignments and homework, to present, to read, to come to the front, and many more. He also inspires his students many times compared to other acts. Last, he hardly ever insulted his students.
