Abstract

This research aims at describing: (1) the phonemic errors in the English speaking practices performed by the second semester undergraduate students of the English Education Department, Yogyakarta State University (YSU) in the academic year of 2014-2015; (2) and the motivating factors of the phonemic errors occurring in the students’ English speaking performance. A descriptive qualitative research method was used for this research. The participants of this research were 36 students. The data of this research were gathered by using three different techniques of data collection consisting of observations, questionnaires, and open-ended interviews. The data were collected first by conducting some observations, then, by distributing questionnaires to the research sample, and finally, by conducting open-ended interviews with 20 students from the research sample. The data gathered from the observations, questionnaires, and interviews were then analyzed using an interactive analysis technique developed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The results of the research show that 21 English phonemes were produced with deviations. Those deviations consist of 27 cases of phoneme substitution, six cases of phoneme deletion, and three cases of phoneme addition. There are some motivating factors for those phonemic errors’ occurrence. First, the English sound system is different from the Bahasa Indonesia sound system. Second, the respondents’ first language sound system (Bahasa Indonesia) affects their way of pronouncing some English sounds. Third, the students work with English phonetic transcriptions in a different class from their speaking class, they do not practice them in their speaking class.
