Abstract

This study aims at finding out the impacts of the use of Extensive Reading technique in improving the reading comprehension at grade eight of SMP Negeri 2 Bantul in the academic year of 2012/2013. This study was categorized as action research. In the study, the researcher collaborated with the English teacher and the students. The data of this study were of qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative data were obtained from the classroom observations, the students’ interviews, and the collaborator’s interviews. Quantitative data were obtained from the pre-test and the post-test. The instruments for collecting the data were observation guidelines, interview guidelines, the pre-test and the post-test. The data of this study were in the form of field notes, interview transcripts, the scores of the pre-test and the post-test. The results of this study show that the use of Extensive Reading is effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension. It is supported by the qualitative data which show that (1) Extensive Reading technique helps the students to provide the sufficient background knowledge that can facilitate comprehension; (2) Extensive Reading technique can help the students improving their vocabulary mastery; (3) Extensive Reading technique provides the students interesting materials that can attract the students’ reading interest and can give positive attitudes toward reading; (4) The Extensive Reading activities such as implementing book flood, implementing sustained silent reading, implementing quick book report, and presenting the materials successfully improve the students’ reading comprehension. Moreover, this technique can attract the students’ reading interest and build positive attitude toward reading. The mean of the students’ reading comprehension scores improves from 67.7 in the pre-test to 80.5 in the post-test. According to the t-statistic, the difference is significant at p <0.05. From the results above, it can be concluded that the use of Extensive Reading technique can improve students’ reading comprehension.
