Abstract

This research analyzes the appropriateness of the aspects of good akhlaq (character) and bad akhlaq embedded in the English textbooks in the perspective of Islam. The aim of this research is to describe the extent of the appropriateness of the content of character education in the English textbooks for year XI of Islamic senior high school students. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach which applies a content analysis method. The subjects of this research are three English textbooks for year XI of Islamic senior high school students written by Eka Mulya Astuti, Th. M. Sudarwati & Eudia Grace, and Tri Indaryati. The data were lingual expressions (e.g. words, phrases, clauses, sentences, and paragraphs) and non-lingual expressions (e.g. pictures, caricatures, comics, and signs). The researcher collected the data by using noting technique. It was done by reading, classifying, and interpreting the data. To gain the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher applied intrarater and interrater techniques. The results show that degree of appropriateness of character education in the three English textbooks for year XI of Islamic senior high school students is low. Generally, the research shows that the content of bad akhlaq in the three textbooks in both lingual and non-lingual expressions appears massively and dominantly in quality and quantity rather than good akhlaq. Furthermore, it is found that there are relationships of human’s akhlaq to Allah SWT, Rasulullah SAW, oneself, family, society, wealth, and environment, but there is no finding about akhlaq to Qur’an. In addition, the data of lingual expressions appear dominantly than the non-lingual data. In the lingual data, the relationship of human’s good akhlaq to Allah SWT and Qur’an is not found, good akhlaq to Rasulullah SAW appears 2 times, good akhlaq to oneself are 50 times, akhlaq to family are 11 times , akhlaq to society are 102 times, akhlaq to wealth 11 times, and akhlaq to environment 8 times. Meanwhile, bad akhlaq to Allah SWT appears 58 times, bad akhlaq to Qur’an is not found, bad akhlaq to Rasulullah SAW are 15 times, bad akhlaq to oneself 227 times, akhlaq to family 7 times, akhlaq to society 83 times, and akhlaq to wealth 82 times, while bad akhlaq to environment is not found. In addition, in the non-lingual data, the relationship of human’s good akhlaq to Allah SWT, Qur’an, and family is not found, good akhlaq to Rasulullah SAW is 1 time, good akhlaq to oneself are 5 times, good akhlaq to society are 10 times, akhlaq to wealth is 1 time, and good akhlaq to environment are 3 times.
