Abstract
The objective of this research is to design a Teacher’s Guidebook for Pronunciation Teaching (TGPT) for the English teachers in elementary schools and to know the characteristics of the TGPT which are appropriate for them. The guidebook is set to help the English teachers in elementary schools to meet three requirements of being good pronunciation teachers. The requirements are having good background knowledge about pronunciation, having good practical classroom skills, and having good access to the creative techniques and activities in teaching pronunciation. The study is educational Research and Development (R & D). It used descriptive qualitative data supported by the quantitative one. The respondents of the research were 13 English teachers from 13 different elementary schools. There were also 3 ex-university students who joined the English for Children courses. The research adapted Gall & Borg steps of R & D. The steps of this research were need analysis, planning, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, evaluating and revising the first draft, writing the second draft, and evaluating and revising the second draft. The result of the research is a Teacher’s Guidebook for Pronunciation Teaching (TGPT) which is completed with a CD. The title of the guidebook is Fun with English Sounds: Panduan mengajar pronunciation yang menyenangkan untuk sekolah dasar. The guidebook consists of 4 units. Three kinds of information are provided in the guidebook. The information are the background knowledge of the pronunciation feature, the model of pronunciation teaching step-by-step, and the materials for the teachers to conduct the pronunciation teaching. There are 23 points can be identified as the characteristics of the TGPT which are appropriate for the pronunciation teaching in elementary schools. The result of the data computation of the expert judgment shows that the category of the designed TGPT is good, while the result of the data computation of the users’ judgment shows that the category of the designed TGPT is very good.
