Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to find out the target and learning needs of 4th semester students of international science classes of Yogyakarta State University (2) to develop appropriate English speaking materials for tutorial practices for 4th semester students of international science classes. The type of this study is Research and Development (R&D). The subjects of the research were the 4th semester students of international science classes in the academic year of 2012/ 2013 at Yogyakarta State University. This study was carried out by employing questionnaires. The data were analyzed using quantitative data analysis. Based on the research findings, appropriate English speaking materials for tutorial practices consist of several sections, namely opening task, main task, study task, practice task, and closing task. The effective objectives of the developed materials are asking for and giving description, asking for and giving explanation, discussing and presenting. The effective inputs are the input which are in form of dialogue or monologue and has less than 450 words in length with list of vocabulary with the meanings and phonetic transcription. Acting out dialogues in pair, translating English words based on the context of the text, answering comprehension questions, having dialogues, and practicing dialogues (role playing) are the effective activities for them. The effective setting for the task is working in pairs. The effective learners’ role is that the students are encouraged to be a problem solver in doing the activities. The effective teacher’s role is to be active in observing and commenting to the students’ activities.
