Abstract
This study aims to give report about errors in writing made by the second year students of SMA N 2 Wates Kulon Progo. The errors observed are grammatical ones; other errors are not taken into consideration. The population of this research consists of 126 second year students of SMA N 2 Wates Kulon Progo. The sampling was carried out by using total population sampling technique which means that the whole population is used as the sample of population. In order to get the data needed, the researcher asked the subject of the research to make English compositions on the topic given. Besides, the subjects of the research were also allowed to make English compositions based on their own favourite topics on writing. Some important findings are reported as follows. From the data used, it can be seen that there are 1217 errors. Based on the surface strategy taxonomy, 485 errors or 39.85 % are misformation errors, 309 errors or 25.39 % are omission errors, 286 errors or 25.5 % are addition errors and 137 errors or 11.26 % are misordering errors
