Abstract

This study was aimed to improve the students’ writing skill of grade seventh at SMP Negeri 07 Yogyakarta through picture-cued activities. This study was action research. It consisted of two cycles with five meetings in the first cycle and two meetings in the second cycle. The research members were students of grade VIIC of SMP Negeri 07 Yogyakarta, the teacher, the collaborator, and the researcher. The research procedure consists of reconnaissance, planning, implementing, and observing and actions, and implementing, observing and actions, and reflections. The data were taken by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the actions, interviewing the students of grade VIIC, interviewing the English teacher, and interviewing the collaborator. The data collecting instruments were field notes, interview transcript, and the students’ writing score. The data were analyzed the qualitatively and quantitatively. The researcher analyzed the data through three steps: (1) reducing, (2) displaying, and (3) verifying the data. The quantitative data were analyzed by using pretest, posttest, and mean value. Meanwhile, the pretest and the posttest were used to investigate the students’ writing improvement. The validity of the research was accomplished by adopting two criteria of validity: (1). catalytic validity, and (2) dialogic validity. The results of the research showed that the use of picture-cued activities was able to improve students’ writing skill. Based on the qualitative data, the students could develop their ideas to produce a descriptive text with appropriate use of the vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and capitalization. They also enthusiastically joined the teaching and learning activities. Based on quantitative data, the students’ mean score for the writing skill improved in the pretest, the students’ mean score was 50.0. Then, the students’ mean score after the first cycle (posttest 1) was 62.493. And the last, the students’ mean score (posttest 2) was 72.47.
