Abstract

This study is aimed at revealing the types of swearing and the reasons for the main character of The Wolf of Wall Street movie to swear in the second 60 minutes. This study is under the concern of sociolinguistics, which is a branch of linguistics which studies language and its functions in society. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with the use of the researcher and a data sheet as the research instruments. The data of this study were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences uttered by the main character of The Wolf of Wall Street movie in the second hour. The data were collected by the employment of simak dan catat technique in which the researcher observed the film and the film transcript, and then highlighted the swearing expressions uttered by the main character. The data analysis technique applied in this study was referential analysis technique, in which the gained data were analyzed reffering to the employed theories. In order to achieve trustworthiness, source and investigator triangulations were employed to confirm the validity of the data. This study reveals the swearing expressions uttered by the main character of The Wolf of Wall Street movie can be classified into four; they are Expletive Swearing (ES), Abusive Swearing (ABS), Humorous Swearing (HS), and Auxiliary Swearing (AUS). Dealing with the second objective, the study shows that there are three classifications of the reasons for swearing. They are Psychological Motives (PM), Social Motives (SM), and Linguistic Motives (LM). Thus, from the study, auxiliary swearing is the preferred swearing expression and linguistic motives are the dominant reason which underlies the swearing expressions uttered by the main character, regarding to the social contexts in the movie.
