Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe: (1) the implementation of English Curriculum 2013 at State Junior High School 8 Yogyakarta, (2) the problems faced by the English teachers, and (3) the efforts to solve the problems. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The informants of the research were two English teachers, principal and three vice principals, four school committee members, and five students of grade seven. These research informants were selected using the purposive sampling technique. The data were collected through observations, interview, and documentations. The data trustworthiness was established through triangulation of sources and techniques. The data were analysed using the Interactive analysis model by Miles and Huberman, consisting of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study are as follows: (1) the implementation of English Curriculum 2013 had already worked, but it needed improvement in the English teaching and learning process. The roles of the English teacher in English Curriculum 2013 are to teach and to educate the students, implementing the scientific method and the character education, and motivating the students. The English teacher of grade seven implemented the scientific method if the method match to the topic. The students are asked to observe, question, associate, experiment, and doing network during the teaching and learning process. The teacher modifies and adds the English learning material in the English Curriculum 2013 syllabus. (2) The problems faced by the English teacher in implementing the English Curriculum 2013 were the input; the students’ ability is lower than the previous year, the students’ self-responsibility, and the teaching and learning facilities such as textbooks, and internet connection. (3) The efforts done by the English teacher to problems of English Curriculum 2013 implementation are motivate the students to learn English, preparing the audio-visual material to attract the student, preparing authentic English learning materials. Other efforts done by the English teacher during the learning process are: a) giving reward and punishment, b) giving guiding question, c) assessing the students’ learning progress, d) monitoring the students’ work in the classroom.
