Abstract

This research was conducted based on the problems found in the teaching and learning speaking skills.The problems were that most students were shy to speak English individually, their self-confidence in speaking was low, their production in the speaking and learning process was low, some of them pronounced some words incorrectly, and the teacher did not implement varied teaching techniques during the teaching and learning process. The purpose of this research was to improve the speaking skill of VIII graders of SMPN 10 Pontianak through story telling. This was classroom action research conducted in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of three meetings covering planning, action, observation and reflection. The model of this research design was adopted from Kemmis and McTaggart. The subjects of the research were 28 students of VIII grade of SMPN 10 Pontianak. The instruments were interview and observation guidelines. The improvement of the students’ speaking skill was seen from the frequency of producing good English. Story telling was used as a teaching technique followed by the interaction during the teaching and learning process. The story telling was administered based on the Genre-Based Approach communicatively through preparation, presentation, practice, and extension. The findings of this research are presented as follows. First, the students became more confident in speaking. Second, the students were not shy anymore in speaking English, and they were really motivated by the teacher’s and their classmates’ performances, and the motivational words given by the teacher as well. Third, they produced more in speaking English through the activities of story telling and interaction during the teaching and learning process. In story telling, all students reached the minimum standard score of 7, even more students scored above 7. In the interactions, the result of the students’ improvement was described from the frequency of their producing English based on the categories. In the 1st cycle, 17 out of 28 students were categorized as good category. There were 6 students who are categorized as average and 5 students who were classified into very good category. There was no student categorized as excellent category. In the 2nd, 19 students out of 28 students were categorized as very good category and 9 students who were classified into good category. There was no more student who categorized as average. There was no student categorized as excellent category.This means that the students’speaking skill has improved through story telling. It is found that story telling is one of the techniques which is useful to improve the students’ speaking skills
