Abstract

This study investigated the use of cooperative learning strategy to improve the students’ motivation and dialog writing achivement of the marketing class. The study was aimed at improving the motivation and achievement of the eleventh grade students of the Pemasaran 1 of SMKN 1 Tempel, Yogyakarta. This study was classroom action research. The subjects were the eleventh grade students of the Pemasaran 1 of SMKN 1 Tempel, Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The procedure of the study consisted of two steps namely the preliminary study and the action. The preliminary study presented the problems faced by the students and the action comprised the steps of the classroom action research. There were three steps taken in this study, namely planning, action and observation, and reflection. The research instruments used in this study were observation sheets, a test, and a questionnaire. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire, and testing. The results of the study are as follows. First, the cooperative learning treatment can improve the students’ motivation. The students’ average score before the treatment is 47.7 and the score after the treatment is 70.33. It increased by 22.63. Second, the cooperative learning treatment can improve the students’ achievement in dialogue writing. Before the treatment, the students’ average score is 35.8, and after the action, the students’ average score is 72.10. The result is higher than the school minimum passing grade (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum Sekolah) which is 72
