Abstract

This study aims to describe the honorifics of Duanu language. The research focuses on: (1) the honorific of Duanu language in terms of the forms, (2) the factors influencing the use of honorifics, and (3) the implications of honorifics in English teaching and learning contexts. This research was descriptive qualitative, with the sociolinguistic analysis. The data were collected from eight informants who were the native speakers of Duanu language. The methods in collecting data were indepth listening, interviewing, and recording. The setting was three villages of Kecamatan Tanah Merah, Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, Riau. The data were collected from July 2013 to October 2013. The analysis of the data used the intralinguistic method, focusing on linguistic items, involving the pragmatic level to find the categorizations of honorific forms, factors influencing the use of honorifics, and their implications in English teaching and learning contexts. The results of this research are as follows. First, the honorifics of Duanu language can be categorized in: (a) referent honorifics, including first person pronoun, second person pronoun, and third person pronoun; (b) hearer honorifics, including honorific forms in family relation, honorific forms in professional relation, and honorific forms in social relation. Second, the factors influencing the honorific use in Duanu language are: (a) power, including age, sex, position in the family, occupation, position in an institution, marital status, education, and existence of supernatural figures; (b) social distance, including solidarity, and familiarity; (c) formality, including purpose, and setting. Third, the implications of honorific in English teaching and learning contexts can be done by comparing the honorifics of Duanu language with honorifics of English, so can be analyzed what is the solution of student’s problem in learning English as foreign language
