Abstract

This study aims to investigate the influence of (1) the students‟ vocabulary mastery on their writing skill, (2) the students‟ grammar mastery on their writing skill and(3) the students‟ vocabulary and grammar mastery on their writing skill at Yogyakarta State University. This research was an ex-post facto. The population comprised the third semester students of Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris (PBI) study program at the Languages and Arts Faculty in the academic year 2013/2014. A sample of three classes was established using simple random sampling technique. One class was assigned as tryout sample and the rest as research sample. The data were collected through tests and an assignment. The test technique was used to collect the data about the students‟ vocabulary and grammar mastery. The assignment was used to collect the data about students‟ writing skill. The data were analyzed using simple regression, multiple regression, and partial correlation. Before the data were analyzed, the prerequisite analysis was conducted. The result of the study show that the students‟ vocabulary mastery was fair (36.11%), the students‟ grammar mastery was also fair (47.22%), and the students‟ writing skill was good (47.22%). The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that vocabulary and grammar mastery together positively influenced the students writing skill (F=16.575, sig. ρ < 0.05). The result of partial correlation indicated that the vocabulary mastery positively influenced the students‟ writing skill (r = 0.497, sig. ρ < 0.05) which its contribution was 27.4%. Moreover, the result also showed that the grammar mastery positively influenced the students‟ writing skill (r = 0.674, sig. ρ < 0.05) which its contribution was 45.5%. Therefore, this study showed that (1) vocabulary mastery influenced the students‟ writing skill, (2) grammar mastery influenced the students‟ writing skill, and (3) vocabulary and grammar mastery influenced the students‟ writing skill.
