Abstract

This research aimedat describing(1) the types of English idiomatic expressions found in the movie Transformers III–Dark of The Moon; (2) explain the translation strategies used to translate movie’s idioms into Bahasa Indonesia; and (3)evaluating the degree of meaning equivalence of the translated idioms. This research useda descriptive–qualitative method with complementary quantitative data. The quantitative analysis was used to measure the occurrence of idiomatic expressions based on their types, translation strategies used, and the degree of meaning equivalence. The qualitative analysis was used to explain the quantitative analysis results and to discuss how an idiomatic expression belonged to a certain type of idiom, to explain the translation strategies used to translate the idiomatic expressions, and to evaluate the degrees of meaning equivalence of the translated idioms. The data sources for this research were theTransformers III-Dark of The Moonmovie and Bahasa Indonesia subtitles. The unit of analysis in this study was all types of English idiomatic expressions and their translations in Bahasa Indonesia. The first instrument of this study was the researcher himself and the second one was the data available. The data set consisted of 231 idiomatic expressions found and discussed in this thesis and in order to analyse them, sampling technique, listening technique, note-taking technique, and content analysis were applied.This research was accomplished by watching the movie and then; collecting, rewriting, classifying, and analyzing the data before making some conclusions. To validate the data, the researcher used triangulation techniques and consulted two inter-raters who had sufficient background knowledge in the topic of the research. The results were as follows. The English idiomatic expressions found in the Transformers III–Dark of The Moon were divided into the following five categories based on theories proposed by Fernando and Hocket. Phrasal compoundwas the most common type of idiomatic expressions. There were 123 idioms or 53,2% of the data that belonged to this type. The second most frequently found were semi idioms with a total of 31idioms or 13,4%, 30 idioms were literal idioms; slang comprised 27 data units or 11.7%; and only 20 of the data unitswere pure idioms or 8.7%. Related to the translation strategies applied in translating idioms, it was found that translation by paraphrasing was mostfrequently used. More than three fourths of the data units or 170 (77.5%) usedthis strategy. The second most used strategy wasliteral translation which was used in the translation of 33 idioms or 14.3%. There were eightidioms or 3.5% translated using idioms of similar meaning but dissimilar form and only five idioms or 2.1% translated using idioms of similar meaning and form. The remaining six idioms or 2.6% wereuntranslated or omitted. Related to the degrees of meaning equivalence of the translated idiomatic expressions, 185 units of data were considered to be equivalent. From the data set, 152 translated idioms or 65,8% were found to be fully equivalent. There were 34 idioms that were given partly-equivalent translations of which 16 involved increased meaning and 18 involved decreased meaning. Meanwhile 46 translated idioms or 19.9% were not equivalent with 40 comprising different meanings and six left completely untranslated resulting in no meaning
