Abstract

This research study was aimed at developing reading materials using the edmodo learning management system for national examination preparation for year XII students of SMAN 1 Kasihan, Bantul. This research was a research and development study through the steps of needs analysis, planning, product development, product validation, product revision, product testing, and final product revision. The respondents include one English lecturer, one English supervisor, one IT teacher, 130 students for needs analysis, and 22 students for product try-out. The data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. This study developed three units of reading materials, namely Message & Announcement, Letter & Email, and Explanation based on the students’ needs in learning reading to improve their reading skills. The English reading materials are graded according to the level of difficulty; from the simple to the most complicated one. The characteristics of appropriate English reading materials include: (1) they should help learners to gain confidence; (2) they should encourage learners to achieve the set objectives; (3) they should provide opportunities for outcome feedback; (4) they should offer learning needs to engage learners both affectively and cognitively; (5) the language used should be authentic. The components of the appropriate English reading materials in terms of their organizations are arranged into four stages of learning: introduction, getting started, moving on, and confirming. The introduction provides the title, the skills that the students should achieve, and activities in brief. In getting started, some information regarding the text and text models are presented. In moving on, some texts with different types of questions are organized for gaining better comprehension. In confirming are presented some texts with multiple choice questions which are constructed to get ready for the final assessments. The experts’ judgments data indicate that the components of the reading materials are appropriate as indicated by the mean ranging from 3.00 to 5.00 on a 5-1 Likert scale. According to the product try-out data, the reading materials are appropriate as indicated by the mean of the students’ responses ranging from 4.20 to 4.90on a 5-1 Likert scale. Based on the students’ scores in completing the activities, they are ready to have their national examination as indicated by the scores ranging from 85 to 96.
