Abstract

The study aimed at developing effective learning materials of English 2 for the students of Islamic Religion Education Department, Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University. This study was a research and development covering needs analysis, syllabus and material development, expert validation, tryout and final product revision. Needs analysis was conducted to attain more input about syllabus and materials development. The product validation involved a content and instructional expert, Islamic Religion Education expert, and graphic design expert. The tryout of product involved 39 students of Islamic Religion Education Department at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview and observation. The needs survey shows that English supported the learning activities at the university level and the input, activities, setting, teacher and learner role should be given much more attention in learning English-2.The data analysis result shows that the materials are appropriate for the students of Islamic Religion Education Department at Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University with the following features: (1) the design model of task consists of: (a) introduction; (b) warming up; (c) performance; (d) improvement; (e) evaluation; (2) the materials should cover the task components such as goals, input, procedure, setting, learner role and teacher role. The result of the study also shows that the materials were well established as indicated by the mean score of the expert’s evaluation and the students’ response on the appropriateness of the learning materials. The mean score of content expert evaluation was 3.8, the mean score of Islamic Religion expert evaluation was 4. 35, the mean score of graphic design expert was 3.83. The tryout results indicate that the means score in each task were 3, 57- 4, 41 for Unit 1; 3, 84-4, 43 for Unit 2; 3, 87-4, 38 for Unit 3.
