Abstract

This research aims to reveal the effect of portfolio assessment and vocabulary mastery on the writing skill of grade X students of SMKN 7 Yogyakarta. This research was corelational ex-post facto, involving two independent variables and one dependent variable. The portfolio assessment was the first independent variable (X1), and the mastery of vocabulary was the second independent variable (X2). The writing skill was the dependent variable (Y). This research was conducted in SMKN 7 Yogyakarta. The population was all students of grade X of SMKN 7 Yogyakarta, totaling 280 students. The sample of 155 students was established using the simple random sampling technique, with the standard error of 5% from Isaac and Michael’s table in Sugiyono (2011:128). The data were collected using a writing test, a vocabulary multiple-choice test, and portfolio documentation. Two kinds of test were used to collect the data on the students’ writing skill and students’ vocabulary mastery. The documentation was used to find out the data of students’ portfolio. The data were analyzed using multiple regression statistics and partial correlation. The result of descriptive analysis indicates that 34.2% of the sample is in the average category for portfolio assessment, 29% is in the average category for the vocabulary mastery, and 44.5% is in the high category for the writing skill. The result of the multiple regression analysis indicates that portfolio assessment and vocabulary mastery combined affects the writing skill (F = 88.606 with sig. p< 0.05). As much as 53.2% variance of writing skill is determined by portfolio assessment and vocabulary mastery. The result of the partial correlation indicates that there is a positive correlation between the portfolio assessment and the writing skill (r = 0.655 with sig. p< 0.05). There is a positive correlation between the mastery of vocabulary and the writing skill (r = 0.618 with sig. p< 0.05). The effect of portfolio assessment on writing skill is higher than that of the vocabulary mastery, as indicated by the standardized coefficient beta 0.453 > 0.394
