Abstract

This research aims at developing vocabulary learning tasks for English Language students of Yogyakarta University of Technology to help create an appropriate vocabulary teaching and learning process in the classroom. This research is a Research and Development study that includes the steps of needs analysis, course grid design, product development, product validation, product revision, try-out, and final product development. The respondents involved in the study included one content and instructional expert and graphics expert, 25 students for needs analysis, and 22 students for try-out. The data were collected through observation, interview, and questionnaire. The instruments of data collection were observation guides, interview guides, expert validation sheets, questionnaires for students, and Alpha Cronbach formula for the reliability. The data were analyzed descriptively. This research developed three units of vocabulary learning tasks, namely: Music, Healthy Life, and Cross Culture. The development of vocabulary learning tasks was based on the needs analysis data. Every unit was made up of the following components: Get Started to provide students with several questions for familiarizing the topic; Words in Context to provide students with a reading text for implicit vocabulary learning; Pronunciation and Parts of Speech to provide students with spelling, sound, and parts of speech; Words and Definitions to provide students with word meaning; Words in Sentences, Sentence Halves, and Categorizing to provide students with reinforcement; Words in Writing to provide students with fluency tasks. The data analysis results show that the developed vocabulary learning tasks are appropriate. The vocabulary learning tasks are ‘appropriate’ based on a total mean of 4.02 on a 5-1 Likert scale. The content and instructional aspect shows a mean of 3.84 and the graphics aspect shows a mean of 4.20. In addition, the results of the try-out indicate that the components of the tasks are ‘appropriate’ with the mean of 4.08.The reliability of the instrument is 0.99
