Abstract

This study aimed to find out the effects of peer, self and teacher corrections on students’ grammar mastery and also whether there any significant difference on the students’ grammar mastery among the students, who were corrected by using different types of correction, by controlling the grammar mastery before the treatment given at Pusat Bahasa, Budaya dan Agama of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga. This was a quasi-experiment study. The peer and self corrections were the experimental class. The teacher correction was the control class. The study was held in Pusat Bahasa Budaya dan Agama Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga. There, the language program centralization is held for the students of the first semester and also the second semester both Arabic and English. The population of the study is the students who join the centralization program at Pusat Bahasa, Budaya dan Agama of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga. The control class and the experimental class were decided by using simple random sampling technique to determine the groups. The chosen classes had the similar characteristics based on the students’ achievement score of the placement test. There were two kinds of variables in this study. The first was the independent variable. The types of corrections were the independent variable. The second was the dependent variable. In this study, the dependent variable is the students’ grammar mastery. The data were gathered by using test that has been tested its validity and reliability. It was given to all the students who are being subjects of the study at the beginning of the research to know about the students’ previous competency in grammar and at the end of the research to show students’ competency in grammar mastery after the treatment given. The data analysis used ANCOVA technique on SPSS 16. The result of the study shows that the types of corrections affect the students’ grammar mastery. This can be seen from the ANCOVA computation. The result proves that F is 3.611 with the significance of probability 0.015 which is lower than 0.050 (0.015 < 0.050). This means that
