Abstract

This study was aimed at exploring and describing the implementation of teaching and learning management at an upper secondary school in Laos. The framework of the research study was formulated around the aspects of school and classroom climate, principal’s management process, teachers’ teaching organization and performance, students’ motivation and attention, parents’ involvement and perception, and involvement and perception of school committee. Qualitative approach supported by quantitative approach was used to describe and analyze the implementation process in the school. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, and interview from fifty students, twenty teachers, one principal, two vice principals at this school, and fifteen parents whose children were studying at this school. The finding shows that the implementation of teaching and learning management in the school has performed well in several ways, whereas some aspects of the performance still need improving to motivate the students for their learning. The principal’s management process was not considered good. The teacher’s performances were not perfect yet. Some students’ competency was not qualified enough. The students’ parents were not highly committed and involved in their children’s learning. The school committee had little trust in schooling since they perceived that schooling costs lots of money. To improve these implementations, several actions should be taken into consideration. The school principal should make clear the planning and implement controlling regularly of teaching and learning process, and should make more contracts with the students’ parents. All teachers should do best their tasks. Students with lower competency should get more attention. The parents should monitor their children’s learning process regularly, and have the close relationship with the school. The school committee should involve more in the students’ schooling, and the trust in the students’ schooling should be taken into account.
