Abstract

The objectives of this research study were: (1) to identify the target and learning needs of grade X students of ceramics craft programme (Kriya Keramik) at SMK N 1 ROTA Bayat (2) to design appropriate learning materials for grade X students of ceramics craft programme (Kriya Keramik) at SMK N 1 ROTA Bayat. This research was a research and development (R&D) study. The steps in this study were conducting the needs analysis, writing the course grid, designing the materials, getting expert judgment, trying-out the materials, evaluating the materials, and writing the final draft of the materials. The subject of this research was the Grade X students of ceramics craft skill programme at SMK N 1 ROTA Bayat. The data were collected using questionnaire, interview guide and observation sheet. There were three kinds of questionnaires, a questionnaire for the needs analysis, a questionnaire to get feedback from the expert, and a questionnaire to evaluate the developed materials. The questionnaire, interview and observation were used to collect the data on the learner’s agreement towards the designed materials. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and qualitatively. In this study, three units were designed based on the needs analysis and the curriculum of vocational high school. The three units are: “Which Ornaments Do You Prefer?”, “How Do I Get to the Ceramics Museum?” and “I Want to Invite You to My Gallery?”. Each unit has the same components, Unit Title, Learning Objectives, Lead-in, Lesson Proper, Evaluation, Self Reflection, Summary, and Word Bank. Based on the research findings the range of the mean values of each task component in all tasks is between 2.78 up to 3.43. Indicating that, the tasks were appropriate. This research showed that an appropriate task has the following features. In term of goal, it helps the students in learning English based on their skill programme and needs. Pictures, written dialogues, spoken dialogues, passages, phonetic transcriptions, and given situation which are comprehensible and suit with the students skill programme are the appropriate input in the materials. For the procedure, the appropriate activities are listen and answer, listen and complete, answering questions based on the dialogue, completing dialogues, having dialogues, practising dialogues, reading passages and answering related questions, reading explanations, writing descriptive texts, and writing invitation letters. Individual work becomes the most appropriate setting in the three units. For the learner role, appropriate materials give opportunities for learners to be active participants. The teacher as a prompter, resource, facilitator and feedback giver are the appropriate teacher role.
