Abstract

This research is aimed to (1) to what extent is the textual meaning breadth variation represented in the Bahasa Indonesia - English JOGJA Tourist Map text in terms of the textual meaning breadth variation?, and (2) what are the contextual factors that motivate the occurrence of the textual meaning breadth variation of those two texts?. This research represents qualitative and descriptive type of research as the framework. The percentages were used to strengthen the findings. Meanwhile the presentation of discussion was presented in a descriptive way. In this research, the data were analyzed by doing some steps of classifying the degree into textual meaning breadth variation and draw conclusion based on the result of the analysis. This study shows that the most prominent textual meaning breadth variation occurred in the highest occurrence of the textual meaning breadth variation between the two texts is of the "lowest" variation (51.43%). This happens because the highest degree of textual meaning breadth variation belongs to the category "0" and the Average of High Degree variation in interval "7.21 or very low". This means that the thematic structure of both texts is highly similar, and that the target text has kept the structure of the target text close to the original text of the map. Secondly, in terms of sentence structure, the change of sentence structure is not much and in term of theme in BI text is topical theme (89.41%), and English text (76.64%), second in BI text is textual theme (8.72%), and English text (9.45%), and the last is interpersonal theme (2.18%) in BI text and (13.91%) in English text. This meant that in terms of Themes in source language are unrealized in target text as the percentages of occuring Themes (Topical, Textual, and Interpersonal). The findings suggest that there are some structure shift happened in the target text due to the problem of different structure between source text and target text. Such change is quite minute since the whole clause meaning is kept constant. The findings really support the theories of translation developed by Halliday (1994) where textual change will convey differnt meaning.
