Abstract

This research was intended to analyze the bilingual translation of A Beautiful Mind movie texts. This study is aimed to analyze the modalization and modulation expressions of the English-Bahasa Indonesia A Beautiful Mind movie texts and explaining the contextual motivating factors of the varying modalization and modulation expressions of the text in questions. This study is a descriptive-qualitative research. The data were taken from the transcript bellow the script. The English texts were taken from phonic channel and the Bahasa Indonesia texts were taken from graphic channel. The instrument of this descriptive-qualitative research is the researcher herself. Then the results of the analysis were recapped on tables and data sheet. After that they were described into words and then motivating factors of the occurring Mood types were explained. Finally, triangulation method is used to prove the validity of the data. The finding shows that the most prominent feature of modality expressions in source text and target text is represented by the modulation category which is represented by obligation expressions. Moreover, the numbers of occurrences of modality in the source text and target text are different. It influenced by the modality expressions are realized into the same type but different degrees, the modality expressions in the source text are unrealized into the target text, and the modality expressions are added into the target text. The motivating factors on the modalization and modulation expressions are status, contact and affect. The result shows that status, contact, and affect influenced each other. The variation expressions in the realization of modalization and modulation in A Beautiful Mind movie texts give some effect to the viewers that divided into three types of viewers, but the most significant is the effect to the viewer type 3. The study of the expressions of modalization and modulation in English-Bahasa Indonesia movie texts give contribution to the translation education context that is on the method of translating the modality.
