Abstract

This study aimed to: (1) identify the basic needs in developing functional academic teaching materials based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) for special teachers of visual impairment students, (2) produce functional academic teaching materials based on feasible Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL), (3) reveal and examine the effectiveness of functional academic teaching materials based on Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) for special teachers of visual impairment students. The researcher implemented R&D research, by applying ADDIE model. The stages of developing functional academic teaching materials based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) are: 1) analyzing the needs, 2) designing the product, 3) developing the product, 4) implementing or testing the product, 5) evaluating the teaching materials that have been developed. The subjects of this study were special teachers who teach visual impairment students, and participated in the trial phase. In developing functional academic teaching materials based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL), it involved material experts, media experts, teachers, and visual impairment students. In collecting the feasible data, a questionnaire was used in order to assess the feasibility of teaching materials, and the effectiveness of the teaching materials was assessed by conducting tests and observations on the performance. The results of this study are: 1) By analyzing the basic needs in the development of functional academic teaching materials based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) for special teachers of visual impairment students, they need teaching materials that pose some significant characteristics such as attractive, easy to understand, and communicative, which cover the functional academic teaching materials; 2) The mean score of feasibility of functional academic teaching materials based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) was obtained, from the results of the feasibility assessment conducted by material experts with several criteria, such as material suitability, presentation feasibility, language, graphics, and the application of Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) teaching materials. Score given by material expert 1 was 4.52 and categorized as very good, while score given by material expert 2 was 4.46, and categorized as very good; Meanwhile, the criteria used by media experts were language, graphics, quality and capacity of the teaching materials, and the feasibility of teaching materials. Score given by media expert 1 was 4.64 and categorized as very good, while score given by media expert 2 was 4.75, and categorized as very good. The mean score of the assessment on feasibility of the product trials were calculated by the teachers by deciding several criteria, such as the suitability of the material, language, graphics, quality, and capacity of teaching materials, and the feasibility of teaching materials, and the mean score was 4.60, categorized as very feasible; and 3) The teaching materials were effective to be used in teaching and learning process. The effectiveness of the teaching materials was indicated from the results of teacher's understanding of functional academic learning with an average increase of 30%. Meanwhile, for the students’, the increase was 21%. Furthermore, there was an increase in posttest score, since the post-test score was higher than the pre-test. As a result, functional academic teaching material based Contextual Teaching & Learning (CTL) is effective for special teachers of visual impairment students.
