Abstract

The aims of this research are to: 1) produce interactive multimedia for English learning that can increase students’ self confidence of 8th graders in junior high school, 2) find out the feasibility quality of interactive multimedia developed, and 3) find out the effectiveness of interactive multimedia in learning English to improve students’ self confidence of 8th grade junior high school. This research is Research and Development (R&D) by adopting ADDIE model development steps (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate). The testing for this product was obtained through conceptual validation and empirical validation. Conceptual validation in the interactive multimedia development stage was carried out by two material experts, two media experts and one junior high school teacher. Empirical validation was carried out by looking at students' assessment responses to the implementation of interactive multimedia in English language learning through product trials and field trials. The product trial was carried out by 10 students, while the field trial was carried out on 30 students. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews, observations, questionnaires, documentation, and tests. This development research produces a product in the form of interactive multimedia short functional text. The results shows that interactive multimedia short functional text is appropriate to be utilized in learning English for 8th grade junior high school students based on the following evidences: 1) material expert validation indicates an average score of 4.65 categorized as very appropriate criteria, 2) media expert validation indicates an average score of 4.57 categorized as very appropriate criteria, 3) middle school teacher assessment indicates an average score of 4.04 categorized as very appropriate criteria, and 4) students’ test scores indicates a mean score of 4.47 categorized as very appropriate criteria. Interactive multimedia products with short functional text are also proven to have high effectiveness in increasing students' confidence, as indicates by the increase in the average score on the posttest in every aspect of confidence and the results of the paired sample t-test with Sig score. (2-tailed) < 0.05. Thus, it can be stated that there is a significant difference in posttest results. The results of students' self-confidence questionnaire data after being given interactive multimedia treatment show an increase of 75%, including in the high criteria.
