Abstract

This research and development aimed to: (1) produce multimedia learning science on water cycle material that can be used in improving cognitive learning putcomes and student's activeness of fifth grade elementary school students, (2) investigate the practicality of multimedia used in learning, (3) investigate the effectiveness of that has been produced in improving cognitive learning outcomes of fifth grade elementary school students, and (4) determine the effectiveness of the multimedia in increasing student's activeness of grade V elementary students. This research and development referred to the stage of development design developed by Allesi & Trollip (2001). This development design consisted of stages, namely planning, designing, and development. Furthermore, product trials consisted of alpha testing and beta testing. The alpha test was carried out by 4 expert judgements, namely 2 material experts and 2 media experts. The beta test was conducted 2 times, small group trials by 6 students and a teacher. The large group trial was conducted by 26 students and a teacher in the VC class as an experimental class, and 28 students and a teacher on class VB as the control class at SD Negeri Rejowinangun I. Data was collected through interviews, product assesment sheets, student activeness observation sheet, student response scales, and teacher response scales. The result showed that: (1) multimedia water cycle material is suitable for learning. The feasibility score on a scale of 5 indicated that the assesment of material expert was 4.04 with the criteria "Eligible", media experts was 4.73 with the criteria "Very Appropriate". (2) Meanwhile, the results of students rensponses on a scale of three is 2.84 eith the criteria of "Eligible", the results of teacher responses in a scale of five are 4.67 "Very Appropriate", (3) water cycle multimedia proven effectively in improving student's learning outcomes. The results of the n-gain test showed the increase in student's learning outcomes in the experimental class was higher than the control class (0.56>0.32), the results of the independent sample t test obtained a significance value of 0.000, and the results of the independent samples t test were obtained significance value 0.000. The percentage of completeness of learning in the experimental class was greater than the control class (84.61%>60.71%), (4) water cycle multimedia was effective in increasing student activity. The results of the n-gain test showed the increase in student activity in the experimental class was higher than the control class (0.43>0.21), the results of the independent samples t test obtained a significance value of 0.000, and the results of the paired samples t test obtained a value significance 0.000. Thus, water cycle multimedia has benn effective in improving cognitive learning outcomes and students activity.
