Abstract

The purpose of this study is to increase the motivation and storytelling skills of grade I students of Muhammadiyah Sapen Yogyakarta Elementary School using hand puppet media in language learning. This research is a collaborative classroom action research with the cycle model design. The subject is the grade I students of Al Ibadi Muhammadiyah Elementary School Sapen, totaling 30 students consisting of 16 male and 14 female students. The data collection was through observation and documentation as well as using a questionnaires and test. The data analysis used the descriptive qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results are as follows. (1) The use of hand puppet media in Indonesian language teaching is able to increase the motivation of grade 1 students of Al Ibadi Muhammadiyah Elementary School Sapen. (2) The use of hand puppet media in Indonesian language teaching could improve the storytelling of grade 1 students of Al Ibadi Muhammadiyah Elementary School Sapen. This is evidenced by the increase in the percentage of completenes of motivation in telling story that is a good predicate.In the first cycle of 43%, then in the second cycle increased 80% of the total number of students. The average and student’s minimum mastery in storytelling skills increased from 62 in Cycle 1to 80 in cycle 2. Likewise, students’ minimum mastery also increased; in Cycle 1, 12 students (40%) completed and in Cycle 2, 26 students (87%) completed.
