Abstract

This study aims to describe: (1) teachers' understanding of interpersonal communication skills, (2) school services in the implementation of interpersonal communication skills development, (3) indicators that indicate the effectiveness of successful interpersonal communication skills development, and (4) the supporting and inhibiting elements for the development of interpersonal communication skills in children from various cultural backgrounds in Kindergarten Negeri 3 Yogyakarta. This was a qualitative study that takes a phenomenological approach. Purposive sampling was used to establish the data sources for this study, which included four teachers from classes A and B. Interviews, observation, and documentation were used to gather information. The data analysis method employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) tools to reduce data obtained from multiple data sources in a reliable and accurate manner before identifying patterns and linkages. The validity of the examined data was next checked utilizing a triangulation of sources and procedures. The results of this study show that: (1) teachers' understanding of the importance of interpersonal communication skills is developed early on children with diverse cultural backgrounds based on the application of tolerance and universal language use (Indonesia), (2) interpersonal communication skills are developed through various support programs, such as extracurricular and intracurricular activities, as well as determining learning resources, methods, and media, such as questions and answers, storytelling, demonstrations, field trips, playing, and giving assignments, and finally media in the form of visual, audio, and audio-visual, (3) the forms of communication made by the teacher are shown through; development of attitudes to build children's trust for openness, empathy, support, positive attitude, equality, as well as non-verbal forms of communication such as; pay attention to body movements/attitudes, make eye contact with children, pay attention to facial expressions, self-appearance, and control the tone and intonation or volume of the voice, (4) family/parents, school services, school programs, community environment, peers, and the child's age are all helping and hindering elements in developing interpersonal communication skills.
