Abstract
Career aspiration is a career goal or plan that is far away in the future. Parenting patterns were important in supporting the career aspirations of children in general, including in the Bonai Tribe. This study aims to: (1) explore career aspirations in the Bonai Tribe, and (2) explore the parenting pattern of the Bonai Tribe. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The subjects were children and parents of Bonai Tribe. Key informants to get the subject were the head of Bonai Tribe and the indigenous youth of Bonai Tribe. The subjects involved were 4 children and 5 parents. Data were collected by non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The validity of the data was tested using the triangulation of sources and methods. Data were analyzed using interactive analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldana, 2014) through the process of data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The results of this study show that: (1) Career aspiration in the Bonai Tribe was limited to working in a company with a sufficient salary and easy access to get a job. Children of this tribe who can complete elementary school and junior high school work as security, company foreman, and palm plantation workers. However, the children who do not continue their education and can not work in the company prefers to continue their parents' work of fishing and gardening. The mindset of parents who are not too concerned with education, make the children have no motivation to pursue higher education. The children are not confident in having high career aspirations as they still fell behind. They do not optimally use technology media to support career aspirations. (2) The parenting pattern apply by parents of Bonai Tribe is permissive parenting and some apply authoritative parenting. Parents who apply permissive parenting are those who do not attend school and have a low socioeconomic status. Their children do not get full attention and support from their parents regarding their education and career. Meanwhile, authoritative parenting was applied by some parents who complete elementary school and have a moderate socio-economic status and wider social relation. These parents are more supportive of their children's education and careers.
