Abstract
This study aims to test effectiveness of the group counseling with behavioral contract technique towards reducing academic procrastination behavior of grade VIII students of SMP Ma'arif 9 Way Jepara. The design of this research was quasi-experimental, with a nonequivalent pre-test and post-tes control group design. This research was conducted at SMP Ma'arif 9 Way Jepara, East Lampung, Lampung Province. The subjects in this study were 14 students of class VIII who were determined through purposive sampling technique. The data collection technique used an academic procrastination scale. The validity of the academic procrastination scale used content validity with expert judgment. The reliability test of the academic procrastination scale used the Alpha Cronbach formula. The reliability test result of the academic procrastination scale was 0.854. This study used non-parametric statistical data analysis techniques, namely the Wilcoxon test and the Mann Whitney test. The results show that the behavioral contract technique is effective towards reducing academic procrastination of class VIII students as evidenced by the value of Z = -3.134, p value = 0.002 (p <0.05). Giving behavioral contract technique group counseling to students shows that the students are responsible for immediately working on school assignments and being on time on collecting schoolwork.
