Abstract
This case study aimed at describing how English was taught for the third grade students in Kalam Kudus Christian Primary School, Surakarta, Central Java. Using the explanatory approach, the study investigated how teaching and learning was set and how English skills were taught in the classroom. To address the research objective, three-month intensive classroom observations were conducted. Students, an English teacher, and a school program coordinator were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. The data were then analyzed qualitatively through thematic content analysis techniques adopting a deductive approach which included data organizing, data review, data coding, description constructing, hypothesis testing, and data interpretation (Lodico et al, 2010). The results revealed information that certain factors have played significant roles in the classroom. Those factors were limited to a student-centered classroom with strong emphasis on active learning, integrated language skill activities, a combination of guided activities and free activities, a theme-based teaching with interactive materials. Those criteria have eventually helped students to function better in the class as students who exhibited natural and flawless interactions, participated freely without worrying about being corrected and actively took parts in teaching learning stages.
