Abstract

This study was carried out based on the urge of improvement of the students’ critical reading skill at SMA Darul Hijrah Putera which was found out through the preliminary research done before the research. It seeks to answer to the following questions: (a) how can students’ critical reading be developed through local legendary tales? (b) How to use legendary tales as the material to improve students’ critical reading skill?. Employing classroom action research design. This research involved 28 students of the second grader (2H) as the subject. This research used mixed-method analysis techniques since it involved the qualitative and quantitative data. Interview was used to collect the data before the research while tests and observation were used along the process of conducting the research. In attempt to compose a valid research there were five varieties of validity processes used; democratic validity, outcome validity, process validity, catalytic validity, and dialogic validity. Furthermore, the findings quantitatively shows that after implementing certain actions to the research subject, that there were some improvements found not only on their critical reading skills but also occurred to the students’ engagements, independency, and confidence. The quantitative data also showed a number of improvement on their test result, where their test result improved for 13.08 points supported by the result of observation checklists score, where it improved for 36.34 points. To that end, the researcher concludes that local legendary tales are good alternative in improving students’ critical reading skills and recommends to use students-centered learning strategies so that the students can have more opportunities to explore the text more freely.
