Abstract

This study attempts to: (1) reveal the needs of the eleventh graders of the English Language and Literature (ELL) program for HOTS-based Supplementary Reading (HBSR) materials at a State Senior High School (SSHS) in Yogyakarta; and (2) develop appropriate HBSR materials based on the students‘ needs. This study is research and development adapting Sugiyono’s (2015) model of product development, namely: (1) identifying potentials and problems; (2) collecting data; (3) designing the syllabus; (4) developing the product; (5) evaluating the product; (6) implementing the product; (7) revising the product; and (8) writing the final product. The subjects were one materials expert, two English teachers, and 143 students. The data were collected through questionnaire, interviews, and observation, and analysed using the descriptive statistics and descriptive qualitative method. In terms of the students’ needs, the research findings reveal that the goals of reading lesson expected by the majority of the students were to comprehend English texts better, to be able to successfully answer the final exam’s questions, as well as to be able to pass the college entrance test. The students believed that they hold intermediate reading proficiency level. The students preferred the topics of learning such as hot issues, hobbies, technology, environment, science and social phenomena together with art and cultures. Most of them further seem to suggest that the learning reading materials should be integrated with HOTS- based tasks/activities in order for helping them comprehend the texts effectively. In terms of the materials’ appropriateness, the developed product was evaluated in terms of content, language, task, presentation, as well as graphic and lay-out. In this respect, the findings show that the developed HBSR materials seem appropriate to be used in reading lesson since it is evident that the product was rated by the expert, the teachers and the students in the category of: “very good” (3.81), “very good” (3.26), and “good” (3.17) respectively.
