Abstract

This study aims to reveal: (1) what English learning model is used by the English teacher in rural junior high school; (2) what is the quality of the existing learning model used in rural junior high school; (3) to what extent is the environment-based collaborative English learning model needed by English teacher and students in rural junior high school; (4) how is the environment-based collaborative English learning model needed by English teachers and students developed; and (5) how could the environment-based collaborative Englishlearning model comply with the need of teacher and students in rural junior high school. This is a research and development study adopting ADDIE approach developed by Branch (2009). The procedures of the research are analize, design, develop, implement, and evaluate. The subject of this research is the English teacher and the seventh graders of SMPN 4 SATAP Pakis Magelang Regency, The data are collected by using observation, in- depth interview, questionnaire, and test. This research was done from January to September 2018. The results of this research are as follows. First, The learning model in rural junior high school is conventional model or traditional model since it covers the characteristics of conventional learning model. Second, The quality of the existing learning model in rural junior high school is not satisfying. It is shown by the average score of the test which is far from the minimal standard score. Third, in a certain degree, the environment-based collaborative English learning model is really needed by teachers and students in rural junior high school. Fourth, the environment-based collaborative English learning model is designed by covering the characteristics of collaborative learning and environment consisting of physical, psychological, instructional, and social environment. Fifth, There is improvement of the teacher’s and students’ ability after the implementation of environment-based collaborative English learning model.
