Abstract

The objectives of this research are: (1) to know the optimum Boron dose for treating rhabdomyosarcoma in the head and neck region, and (2) to know the effective irradiation time to treat rhabdomyosarcoma in the head and neck region. This research was using Particle and Heavy Ions Transport code System (PHITS) to simulate neutron source and BNCT doses. Neutron source used was Kartini Reactor. The simulation was done by creating geometry of cancer tissue and head and neck region. Boron concentration variance in this research was 30, 35, 40, 45, and 50 μg/g tissue. The output of PHITS were neutron flux and neutron dose. The neutron flux value was used to acquire alpha dose, proton dose, and gamma dose inside tissues. The result of this research shows that: (1) the optimum boron dose for treating Rhabdomyosarcoma in the head and neck region is 50 μg/g tissue, and (2) the effective irradiation time to cure Rhabdomyosarcoma in the head and neck region is 7 hours and 4 minutes, which is acquired by the boron concentration of 50 μg/g tissue. The higher the boron concentration level, the higher the dose rate, the quicker irradiation time, and lesser radiation dose received by healthy tissues.
