Abstract

This research was aimed at determine the characteristics of Cumulonimbus cloud using satellite imagery and data of surface weather. Satellite imagery which used in this research was Himawari Cloud data. The data was result of the observation of Himawari-8 satellite by using Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) sensors which consists of 16 channels/band and each channel has its own resolution to data changes every 10 minutes. The software used to obtain information from this imagery data was SATAID (Satellite Animation and Interactive Diagnosis). In contrast to satellite imagery, surface weather data that used is the result of observation of the earth’s surface by using synthetic meteorological instruments as well as doing visual observations includes wind conditions, weather conditions, air pressure, air temperature, rainfall and cloud conditions. Then, using Microsoft Excel software to process and analyze data. Result of the research shows that, Cumulonimbus cloud over its lifetime in about 1 to 2 hours. Proceed of the spectral value has high average reflectance value (greater than 0) at B01 to B04 and low average brightness temperature value (less than 0oC) at B07 to B16. However, there was no obvious distinction at B05 and B06 before, during and after Cumulonimbus cloud was formed. The relations between channel during the Cumulonimbus cloud was formed for B13 (IR) and B08 (WV) have difference ≤43Co with minimum value is 7Co and the difference of B13 (IR) and B15 (I2) is ≤8.3Co with minimum value is 0.9Co. Based on surface weather, there is no clear pattern for wind direction because it has varied wind direction whose speed is 3 to 10 knots, air pressure is about 999.20 to 1001.60 mbar, temperature range is from 24.2oC to 32oC, relative humidity range is from 57% to 93%, the amount of Cumulonimbus cloud cover is between 4 to 5 oktas and the part of sky covered by the cloud is about 6 to 8 oktas.
