Abstract

This study aims at determining the degree of acetylation of synthesized cellulose acetate from rice straw and also determining synthesized cellulose characters and acetate, viewed from functional group analysis. This research was conducted through two steps which were the isolation of cellulose from the straw and synthesized cellulose acetylation. Characterization done covered three phases including the determination of the yield of synthesized cellulose, the determination of acetylation degree, and characterization of functional groups using FTIR. The research results show that the synthesized cellulose yield from rice straw is 10.5%. The acetylation degree from the synthesized cellulose acetate from rice straw is 23.59%. Characters of the functional group of the synthesized cellulose acetate are almost similar to the cellulose functional group; there are only two different groups which are 1427.32 and 1319.31 cm-1. The absorption in the area of 1427.32 cm-1 shows the existence of bending vibration of C-H which comes from the group–O(C=O)-CH3. The absorption in the area of 1319.31 cm-1 is stretching vibration from the acetyl group.
