Abstract
This study aims at exploring some problems; first. exploring the depiction of students' identity of Riau, Makasar, and Irian Jaya, how far their national awareness; second, understanding factors causing the emergence of their identity; third, offering long term solution in effort to perpetuate cultural values to them, especially to those in tribe-based dormitory who hold the value of difference in unity; fourth. in state level, offering a long term solution in effort to handle ethnic-based conflicts. Techniques for data collection are I) interview, 2) documentation, are 3) observation. The population of this research is students in tribe-based dormitory of Riau, Makasar, and Irian Jaya. To determine the subject. researcher used purposive sampling; those enrolling as organizers of the dormitory (chairman, secretary, treasurer, public relation. and security). In addition, the data analysis technique used is inductive analysis. The findings are I) high national awareness of the students, 2) relatively high ethnic identity of the students. National and ethnic identity of students of Makasar are little higher than the others, 3) factors influencing the strengthening of ethnic identity are same historical background in struggling against the colonialists, heroism. external threat. 4) factors influencing the strengthening of ethnic identity are ethnic patriotism, feeling of the same destiny. the attention of the native-local government. and the togetherness among the students, 5) the formulations to overcome ethnic conflict are involving ethnic figures in solving problems. bottom up solving problem. paying attention and giving space to the difference of the parties involving in conflict.
