This article offers studies on 55 manuscripts in Babad Banyumas, which can be categorised into 14 versions. These versions fall into ten versions in the formof prose, and four versions in the form of verse. The ten versions are (I) Kalibening, (2) text transformation of Mertadiredjan, (3) Adimulya, (4) PRBN, (5) Kasman Soerawidjaja, (6) Wirjaatmadjan, (7) Oemarmadi & Koesnadi, (8) Panegak Widodo-Nakim, (9) Danuredjan, and (10) Keluarga Baru. The other four versions include (I) Jayawinata, (2) Danuredjan, (3) Mertadiredjan, and (4) Banjarnegara. Creating the new text was aimed at legitimizing theMertadiredjan family that became the newrulers in Banyumas at that time. After Yudanegara V passed away, the Mertadiredjan family emphasized five points in making texts. Those were (I) the history of Pangiwa, (2) the biography of Raden Putra, (3) the biography of Raden Kaduhu, (4) the life story of Meranggi Kejawar and Bagus Mangun when young, and (5) the genealogy of the Mertadiredjan family. Besides, the writers in the era also attempted to transformthe texts from 7 cantos to 7 different cantos in terms of the types of tembang macapat and the number of verses. The last eight cantos consisted of the same texts as found in Babat Banyumas (BR.58r
