Abstract

This classroom action research aims to improve the mastery of Indonesian syntactic concepts of the students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, the Faculty of Languages and Arts, the Yogyakarta State University, through the concept-mapping learning media. This 'classroom action research applied John Elliott's model or design. There were two cycles in the research, each of which consisted of four steps. To investigate the improvement of the mastery of Indonesian syntactic concepts, the research employed a test, of which the contents were about sentences, sentence patterns, clauses, phrases, constituents, and immediate constituents. On the basis of the research findings, it can be concluded that the concept- mapping media can improve the mastery of Indonesian syntactic concepts of the students involved in the research, i.e. the students of the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, the Faculty of Languages and Arts, the Yogyakarta State University. The improvement of the mastery of Indonesian syntactic concepts is proved by the increase of the mean score of the pretest, which is 3.62, to a mean score of 5.74 after the learning process applying the concept- mapping media in Cycle I. Meanwhile, after the application of the concept-making media in the learning process in Cycle II, the mean score achieved by the students is 8.49. The improvement of the mastery of Indonesian syntactic concepts is also proved by the mean score of the posttest; 16 students (88.89 %) achieve a score of higher than 8.00 and only 2 students (11.11 %) achieve a score of lower than 8.00.
